Alex stumbled into lindy hop in 2013, looking for “something else to do”. It didn’t take long for the lindy bug to bite, and she quickly became infatuated with the joyful dance. The playfulness, dynamic connection between the dancers, spontaneity and creativity of the dance are things which she adores and strives to focus on in her own dancing and sharing. She thinks everyone should be dancing (especially those with two left feet!) and believes the world will be a much happier and better place if everyone dances to lindy hop.

Brian has been dancing for 15 years and teaching for 10. In that time, he has explored much of swing dance, lindy hop and tap dance and delved into some of the history and culture surrounding Lindy Hop in the 30s and 40s. He continues to teach and spread the dance where and when he can.

Deborah began dancing lindy hop and balboa 11 years ago, while living in the US. Despite moving countries four times and the occasional foray into other partnered dances, swing dancing is still her number one passion. She loves the energy, momentum, and fun that lindy hop embodies, and constantly seeks to share that joy.

Hashim (Shagies)

A music composer and arranger by day, Hashim won himself the COMPASS Top Local Malay Pop Song Award (Composer) in 1998 and Top Local Soundtrack Award (Composer) in 2012. One of the highlights of his glittering career as a guitarist with the Shagies was representing Singapore at Surabaya, Indonesia for the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board in 1996 and also one of the opening acts in 1993 Sentosa Music Festival featuring Bon Jovi, Rick Price, Jimmy Barnes and Andy Lau. Now, he feels that it is time to give back and share his vast experience and knowledge to the young and whoever wishes to explore music by learning and playing the guitar. With practice, dedication, and Hashim guiding you as your Timbre Music Academy guitar instructor, no goal is unachievable!

Helman Kamal

Drums and percussions make up the bigger part of Helman’s life. Classically trained as a symphonic percussionist, his obsession with drums and percussions soon transcended beyond genres. Performing genres ranging from classical to rock; electronic to traditional, he has enjoyed playing both local and regional gigs.

These include various performances such as the “Esplanade Presents” series, opening of Silk Club in Bintan Lagoon Resort, and sporadic shows at many nightlife spots around Singapore. Helman is also part of a percussion unit, Fanka Fellas, who is the premiere djembe band in Asia. Fanka Fellas, who appear regularly at percussion hotspots such as Blu Jaz Cafe and Barrio Chinos, have recently released their debut album, Jump.

Hong Wee

Hong Wee has been dancing for 17 years, without realising the passion for swing would last so long. He has participated in and been placed in competitions such as Korean Lindy Hop Championship (KLHC) and Taipei Swing Festival. However, his first love has always been the social aspect of swing – the friends, fashion and fun of swing.

Kevin became interested in lindy hop when he saw social dancing for the first time. A fast learner, Kevin quickly picked up advanced skills and techniques that led to him performing and teaching Lindy hop in Singapore. He continues to hone and refine his dancing, learning through teaching and performing.

Mang (O.K READY!)

Having played for notable bands such as Zero Sequence (progressive metal) and Goodfellas (pop-rock), Mang is now lead vocalist and guitarist for popular Timbre resident band O.K READY!, performing to capacity crowd every week. During the day, Mang is lead instructor for vocals and guitar at Timbre Music Academy. It is evident in his heartfelt vocal delivery that he is dedicated to every performance. Mang is a firm believer that music is nothing without passion.

Matthias (Wicked Aura / Sweatshop Jam)

A much-in-demand contemporary drummer who is skilled in both hand percussion and the drum kit, Matthias has had opportunities to perform at various local and International events including Solo International Ethnic Music Festival, Gilles Peterson. Closer to home, he has been actively involved in National Events such as the National Day Parade on three different years both as a performer and assisting in choreography. He hopes to continue achieving greater heights as a musician and to educate the future generation of musicians to come.

Sara (53A)

Lead singer, Guitarist and MicroKorgist of  popular Timbre Resident band 53A, Sara is a seasoned and sought-after vocalist and guitarist with 8 years of experience performing ‘live’ music at established local spots, including Timbre. Having performed at Timbre ever since we first opened our doors, Sara feels that it is only right that she too is part of the mentorship programme at TMA. A firm believer that nobody is too young or old to start learning music, Sara’s greatest achievement as a music instructor was to help a deaf student sing his favourite song.
